David Whitley has put together an amazing DVD on the Turkish Get Up.  This DVD has single handidly put TGUs back into my personal programs as well as the programs of my clients.

Prior to watching this video, I did not understand TGUs.  I knew how to do them, I knew that the RKC put them in the curriculum for a reason, but I was not feeling the love.  I had my client’s do them occasionally basically for the sake of doing them, the token TGUs you could say.

I was starting to understand how they could be used as a movement screen and how they could improve faulty movement but I did not understand enough to implement it.  Then came this DVD.

I learned how to keep the leg down on the get-up-sit-up.  Until now I had not been able to keep my leg or my clients’ leg from popping off the floor.  We could keep it to a minimum but it was always present.  I learned how to fix this problem within the first 5 minutes!  5 minutes to fix a problem I had been struggling with for over 2 years!  BTW, I no longer call it a get-up-sit-up, that was a big part of the problem.

From there Dave goes on to teach how to connect the lat to the Glutes, how it really is one big muscle.  Then to use that knowledge when correcting the positions and common mistakes of the TGU.  Say good bye to shoulder impingements.  Not one but two of my clients reported immediate shoulder pain reduction once I implemented the knowledge from that one part of the video.

From there Dave went into thoracic mobility and then the Bent Press.  To be honest, I am not exactly interested in that particular exercise so I kinda skimmed during that section.  However given Dave’s level of explanation during the rest of the video, I can guarantee that when I do decided to take it up, this will be the first place I look for instruction.

In Deepening Your TGU Skills Dave shows the great depth and understanding of this movement.  His presentation left me with few questions about the TGU and almost all of them he answered during his presentation at about the same moment I thought of them.

Deepening Your TGU Skills is a great DVD to watch and absorb from.  I full recommend this to any trainer or individual looking to get more in touch with their TGU and understand the foundation behind it.
